Nursing Leadership - Executive Competencies

According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, leadership is defined as 1: the office or position of a leader, 2: capacity to lead, 3: the act or an instance of leading.  This “textbook” version lacks depth and personality so we searched to find how others define leadership in their own words.  Here are a few definitions that stood out above the rest:
  • “As we look ahead into the next century, leaders will be those who empower others.” -Bill Gates
  • “True leaders understand that leadership is not about them but about those they serve. It is not about exalting themselves but about lifting others up.”  - Sheri Dew
  • “Leadership is the capacity to translate vision into reality.” - Warren Bennis

The American Association of Nurse Executives (AONE), whose mission is “To shape health care through innovative and expert nursing leadership,” published a paper entitled, “The AONE Nurse Executive Competencies.” The Nurse Executive Competencies Model, originally developed by the Healthcare Leadership Alliance in 2004, outlines the following competencies as essential to healthcare leadership:

I. Communication and relationship-building
II. A knowledge of the health care environment
III. Leadership
IV. Professionalism
V. Business skills

AONE’s paper on Nurse Executive Competencies is a tremendous resource for individuals who aspire to a leadership role in healthcare, for those who would like to improve their leadership skills, or for an assessment tool for both employers and employees.
For a more in-depth understanding, Melnic Consulting Group recommends reading the full document here:  The AONE Nurse Executive Competencies

Nursing Leadership - Building Team Credibility

Nurse Leadership Success Strategies

Successful teams have successful leaders, but leadership is not something that is just handed to you overnight.  Stepping into a new nursing leadership role can be a rocky road, especially if you are a new nurse leader, or the new leader of an existing team.  Success starts with a well-defined strategy that includes building trust, opening up communication, and establishing credibility.  If managed correctly, this can be a time of opportunity, development and improvement, but if mismanaged, this time can also lead to resistance and resentment.

If you are a stepping into a new nursing leadership position, this article from Leadership Caffeine - Get it Right When Starting Up with Your New Team by Art Petty, author and consultant, provides some great strategies to navigate the uncharted territories of leading a new team.  You’ll also discover: The 4 Stages of New-Leader Assimilation, 5 Key Issues at Start-Up, and 4 Common Pitfalls of the Start-Up Leader.

Case Managers and Medicaid Reimbursements from States

In an effort to improve care and reduce the costs of providing Medicaid services to recipients, some states in the U.S. are taking a different approach to their Medicaid reimbursement programs. This is of particular interest to Case Managers as they continue to coordinate services and advocate for patients in a medical climate where change is happening very quickly.

Last year, a few states took the step of increasing reimbursement for providers, while others kept reimbursement rates at the same level and some even reversed reductions that had been in place the previous year. There isn’t any real consistent approach the states are taking to this situation, but the trend seems to be that fewer states are cutting pay for Medicaid providers than in the past. Still, some increase payments to hospitals while reducing benefits for inpatient and outpatient services, while others cut reimbursements to hospitals but not to other providers. In some instances, laws have been enacted that result in an increase in coverage or a decrease in barriers to Medicaid and the CHIP (Children’s Health Insurance Plan) program. This indicates a definite trend away from the perception that the goal has been a focus on saving money at the cost of providing quality health care.

Whether they work for providers, hospitals or physicians, Case Managers are highly qualified leaders with excellent strategic, management and communication skills, and they are committed advocates for patients to ensure they receive the appropriate health care services. All of these changes are affecting the work of Case Managers everywhere, offering many challenges to providing efficient, high quality health care at a lower cost that will result in positive outcomes.

If you are a passionate leader with experience in Case Management, then a leading academic children’s hospital in the Midwest has an exciting opportunity for you.  Consider joining this 288 bed facility that is #9 on the Honor Roll of U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Children’s Hospitals” for 2012-13 and is nationally ranked in all ten pediatric specialties, with five in the top ten in the U.S.

Chief Nursing Informatics Officer - Emerging Role for Nurse Leaders

An exciting and essential new role is emerging in the Nursing Leadership space.  Now, more than ever, there is a rise in both the opportunity and demand for the Chief Nursing Informatics Officer (CNIO) to become a crucial addition to the executive leadership of hospital-based organizations.  While the role is not yet standardized across the industry, and is still unclear in terms of title, salary, responsibilities, and reports, the necessity for nursing informatics leadership has never been more crystal clear.  During a period of significant challenges to the healthcare system, the demand for efficiencies and quality is paramount. The Chief Nursing Informatics Officer has the opportunity to lead the role of nursing to optimize care and drive down costs through data driven decision analysis and support.

Now is the time for nurses to “get a seat at the informatics table,” according to industry experts and clinical informaticists leaders.  Organizations are seeing the CNIO play a key role in not only coordinating IT efforts in nursing but also in care coordination across the board.  Technology continues to play an integral part of advancing the hospital system, and as more organizations move to Electronic Health Records, or EHRs, and demand for improvement of care documentation continues to increase, nurses will be at the core of this technology movement.  For experienced nursing leaders, this is an incredible opportunity to make a difference in this changing healthcare environment - and as an executive level position, the salary is often paying $200,000-plus!
