Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Resume and CV Tips

According to the famous saying, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” This is true for your resume as well.  Organization, content, and structure are the keys to a successful pediatric nursing resume.

For pediatric nurse practitioners, a resume not only documents your accomplishments, experiences and skills; it will speak for you when you cannot be there to speak for yourself.  Professionalism, clarity, and well thought out information will communicate these traits about you, and help you get the interview.

Answers to common questions:

Should I have a resume or a CV?
If you have been a pediatric nurse longer than 5 years we highly recommend a CV to highlight your experience, education, research, publications, grants, honors, and professional development.

Should my resume only be one page?
No, in the nursing profession most nurses engage in a multitude of areas of professional development that is difficult to showcase on only one page.  It is important to show the hospital environment you work for in terms of acuity, number of beds and patient population.  You will also need enough space to highlight your work experience in terms of accomplishments, procedures, and professional development.  See our sample pediatric nursing resume

What is the best structure for my PNP resume?
The easiest to read and write, and thus the most common resume format, is chronological. It begins with your most recent PNP experience and works backward through your previous jobs. This format is most widely used by your peers.  Learn more about PNP Resume Structure

PNP New Graduate Transition, What Now?

When you transition from a registered nurse to a pediatric nurse practitioner (PNP), your job transitions from a “job” to a “career.” That transition can be both exciting and uncertain. The transition has been described as carrying the bloody diaper to the provider to ask, “What do I do?” to being the provider. Many refer to it as learning to become the decision maker. That new level of PNP knowledge and responsibility carries with it documented levels of stress and fear that is reasonable but requires support.

When you enter the last six months of your educational training to become a PNP, you might also consider starting your job search. The NAPNAP Career Guide is a great place to find numerous resources that are particularly valuable for PNP New Grads.  Consider your PNP network, make a list of references, map out your geographic, practice setting, and unit or clinic preferences, and then start an electronic or paper file to track your plan and efforts. Create a calendar; include dates when you can work on your plan and times when you can interview either by phone or on-site. In addition, include two-four weeks of focused time after you graduate, to study for your boards. Think about your ideal PNP start date as well.

Congratulations to all the December New Grads!

Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Sample Resume for New Grads

PNP recruiters are often not familiar with the Masters of Nursing programs that PNP job candidates have attended.  This is particularly true if the candidate attended an out-of-state Pediatric Nurse Practitioner program.   When developing your resume, it is a good idea to provide an outline of the program you attended.  Include a detailed list of your clinical experience so that potential employers can see the size of the unit/volume of facility, the amount of time spent in each location, the procedures performed, and the acuity level of the patients.

Pam Rush, Recruitment Manager at Melnic Consulting Group, is an expert in developing and editing Advanced Practice Nursing resumes.  With over 14 years of recruiting experience, both in the agency and corporate setting, Pam knows what PNP recruiters are looking for when sifting through resumes.  Before submitting PNP candidates to the top children’s hospitals in the nation, Pam works with Melnic’s candidates to ensure that their resumes accurately highlight the skills, assets, and experiences that appeal most to PNP employers.

Submit your PNP resume to Pam for her editing suggestions >>

More PNP Resume Tips for New Grads:
• Typically hiring authorities are looking for more information regarding clinical rotations; the number of hours for each, the unit size and acuity, and procedures performed. Clinical rotations should look very similar to your work history - with the location and the bulleted list underneath to explain your experience.
• Bullet your experience under each job; it is easier to review and better highlights your accomplishments.
• Watch your spacing and make sure everything lines-up; all dates should have the same location in conjunction with the job title.
• Make sure your spelling and grammar is correct.  Have someone read over your resume prior to sending it to a potential employer.
