Childhood Obesity, NAPNAP 2012

Chris Wagner, PNP, from Children's Medical Center of Dallas, presents her poster at the NAPNAP 2012 Conference in San Antonio, TX. As a certified asthma educator in the pulmonary department, Ms. Wagner describes her research on improving children’s eating habits and how to help them make better nutritional snack choices.  This is a timely topic that ties closely with NAPNAP’s preconference event focused on childhood obesity.  This educational event was held in response to the nationwide epidemic and call for action by First Lady Michelle Obama to address this pressing issue throughout our Nation.  Currently 1 in 3 children in America are overweight or obese.

Chris Wagner, PNP, is on the board of Camp Broncho, an asthma camp for kids, located in North Texas.  In this interview by Melnic Consulting Group, learn how Camp Broncho began to teach kids healthy eating habits and will strive to educate future campers on nutritional snack selections for a healthier lifespan.

Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Role Clarity

Role clarity of the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner is a barrier for many PNPs in the workplace, and often causes confusion and misunderstanding among co-workers and patients.

At the NAPNAP Conference in San Antonio, TX, Molly Stenger, CPNP from Cincinnati Children’s Medical Center presented her poster on the role clarity of the pediatric nurse practitioner in the emergency department.  Watch the below video to see how she confronted this barrier and overcame the PNP role clarity obstacle at Cincinnati Children’s Medical Center.

Loretta Ford, NAPNAP Conference, San Antonio, TX

Loretta Ford at NAPNAP 2012
Loretta Ford, NP, EdD, FAAN, delivered an inspirational and fascinating speech at this year’s NAPNAP Conference in San Antonio, TX.  Attending the Loretta Ford Past President’s Dinner in her honor at the age of 90, Loretta Ford is widely known and acclaimed for beginning the nurse practitioner movement more than 40 years ago.  There are now 140,000 practicing Nurse Practitioner in the United States.  View pictures from the Loretta Ford Dinner, NAPNAP 2012

Ford, who was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame last year, has graduate degrees in nursing and a Doctorate in Education from the University of Colorado.  She was also certified as a Public Health Nurse. Learn more about Loretta Ford

Ford says “Nurse practitioners have become embedded in every aspect of healthcare” and have “transformed the profession.”  Nurse practitioners have the ability to assess, diagnose, treat and evaluate and are allowed to have independent practices in many U.S. States.

Jill Gilliland, CEO of Melnic Consulting Group, says “It was truly an honor to have Loretta Ford at NAPNAP 2012 in San Antonio, TX.  She is a remarkable woman who paved the way for Nurse Practitioners nationwide.”

NAPNAP Goes to Capitol Hill - Event Recap

Jill Gilliland, President of Melnic Consulting Group, a recruiting firm who specializes in pediatric advanced practice and nurse leaders, joined NAPNAP at their annual “Fly –In” event in Washington, DC.   Jill said, “Meeting with the healthcare advisor from Virginia, Representative Moran, Senator Warner, and Senator Webb’s office staff was a very positive and enlightening experience.  We discussed their involvement and promotion of healthcare and specifically their support for the role of the pediatric nurse practitioner.”  In a recap provided by Jill Gilliland, she notes that they were interested in the following NAPNAP agenda and provides insight into the topics of discussion:
  • Improved Medicare Patient Access to Home Health Services addressing the ability of PNPs to refer for these services.  Particularly for children with renal failure awaiting transplantation.
  • Enabling PNPs to Organize Accountable Care Organizations by mending Section 1899 (c ) to allow PNPs to establish their own ACOs and to recognize general pediatrics as a primary care service.  This would allow clinics that are PNP run which to be included in the ACO funding model.  Many times PNPs run and operate clinics in rural areas or for community based services.  We do not want them to be excluded from the ACO model as they provide care for many of the patients the healthcare bill is designed to benefit.
  • Preserve Medicaid and the Children’s Health Insurance Program which is the single largest insurer for children from low-income families.  These programs cover every 3 out of 10 children and youth which is 30 million children nationwide.  89% of PNPs report treating children covered by Medicaid.  Melnic Consulting Group has seen Medicaid reimbursement as a percent of revenue for children’s hospitals grow from 45-50% 2 years ago to up to 70% today.  Without Medicaid and CHIP reimbursement, many of the nation’s sickest children would not get the help they need.
  • Support Fiscal Year 2013 Funding for Nursing Workforce Development Programs.   With the high unemployment rate at the top of the political agenda in Washington, supporting Title VIII of the Public Health Services Act by funding the current program is a step towards addressing the problem.  These funds are essential to educating student and would fund 1,400 advanced practice registered nurses in primary care.  These students can then become employed in a field in which the demand for workers is one of the highest in the US.  As the healthcare bill unfolds, the need for primary care providers to meet the needs of the growing number of insured people increases as well.  As Massachusetts has seen, the decrease in pay to physicians has left a gap between the number of people who need a provider and the number of available providers.  Nurse Practitioners are a solution to the demand and therefore, funding education is a means to solving both the increase demand for providers and lowering of the unemployment rate.
Jill Gilliland said that, “the health care advisors were eager to address the issues facing children’s health care and explore solutions.”  Washington is currently waiting for the court ruling on the health care bill but hopefully the commitment to an economical, needs based solution will continue to drive their votes and support - especially for our nation’s children.

NAPNAP Goes to Capitol Hill

Executive members of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) are in Washington, DC today to represent advanced practice nursing professionals and promote children’s health within the United States.   This annual event, known as “Fly In,” is led this year by Mary Chesney, NAPNAP Health Policy Chair.  She is joined by Cheri Barber, NAPNAP President, Laura Searcy, NAPNAP Health Policy Member at Large, Dave Mason, NAPNAP’s Governmental Affairs Director, the NAPNAP Health Policy Committee and volunteers throughout the industry.

NAPNAP Community- Social Networking

We have exciting news. The NAPNAP Community, a social networking platform for members, is available for you to network online with your NAPNAP colleagues at www.napnap.org. The new Community features an interactive Member Directory, eGroups and Resource Library.

Use the Member Directory to upload your photo, biography, certifications and job history. The best part is you control how much information is viewable to members.

Going forward you may now communicate with your fellow SIG members using the eGroups feature instead of using the list server. You may post messages, reply to the entire group, and share documents by uploading them to the resource library and more. An FAQ has been posted to the online community to get you familiar with the new social networking site. Read the FAQ online.

To access the Member Directory, eGroups and Resource Library:

1. Login at www.napnap.org with your Member Number and Password and click on Community Profile.
2. You will see a link to your SIG(s) under the Groups section (just below My Contacts). Click on your SIG. You will see a listing of members in your SIG.
3. To access the entire eGroup, click on the “View the eGroup” link.
4. To post a message select “Post New Message”
5. Subscribe to the eGroup by selecting your notification preferences for the eGroup (Note: you will only be asked to do this one time per eGroup)
6. Click Save
7. Post your message
If you wish to add a document to the resource library select the “View the Library” link after you select your SIG eGroup. Once you are logged into the library select “Add a Document” and upload your document from your computer and save it.

Have fun and build your network today! Login to www.napnap.org. Any questions regarding the NAPNAP Community can be directed to info@napnap.org.

Thank you,
