Pediatric Home Care Services on the Rise

The demand for pediatric home care services has seen significant growth over the past 30 years.  Pediatric home care is the provision of medical care to children within their own homes.  These children are in need of a wide range of care, and may be suffering from an illness, recovering from surgery, or may have a disability.

It is estimated that over 500, 000 children use home health services in the United States.  According to a report published by the AAP, the growth is due to factors such as an increase of survival rates of those who receive inpatient care, simplification of medical equipment, advanced treatments, family preferences, and cost savings of in-home care versus extended hospital stays.  Today, the breadth of services administered to children in the home has significantly broadened to include such treatments as rehabilitation, pain management, intravenous medications, dialysis, surgical care, and beyond.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recognizes the benefits and growth of pediatric home health care and advocates for improvements in the financing of in-home care for children - Medicaid is currently the major payer of pediatric home health care.  "There's no place like home," can be especially true when a child is receiving medical care and can do so with the surroundings of family, friends, and the comforts of home.  The financial benefits of home care compared with continued hospitalization, also provides comfort, relief, and peace of mind for the family.

With the demand for pediatric home care services on the rise, so is the demand for in home healthcare providers.  Melnic Consulting Group currently has a unique and dynamic leadership opportunity for a Director of Children’s Home Care Services at a leading academic center children’s hospital in the Pacific Northwest.  The Director in this leadership role is responsible for the 66+ member team that manages the following services: Home care pharmacy, respiratory and durable medical equipment services and infusion and nutrition therapies. The proven leader in this role develops and implements strategic initiatives for services including business and clinical operations, facilities, capital and operating budgets, staffing and compliance with State and Federal health care regulations.

AAP NEC 2011

AAP NEC 2011 was a huge success! The attendance by Pediatric Physicians, Pediatric Surgeons, Pediatric Specialty Care and Primary Care Physicians, and Advanced Practice Pediatric Providers topped last year with over 8,000 attendees. Melnic Consulting Group was proud to be a part of 2011 AAP Conference.

Melnic’s Product Theater Presentation, "Increase Practice Productivity and Expand Care: Benefits of Integrating Pediatric Nurse Practitioners into the Practice," proved to be a timely topic of interest for many of the attending Pediatric Physicians. Jill Gilliland, along with Pediatric Physicians, Dr. Lisa Cosgrove and Cindy Juster, MD, provided insight about Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Salaries, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Scope of Practice, PNP Retention Strategies, and the overall benefits of hiring a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner into the practice.

Newly elected AAP President, Robert Block, MD provided further validation of the positive impact of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners in the Practice during a conversation with Melnic President, Jill Gilliland. Dr. Block pointed out the significant importance of forming a closer relationship between AAP and NAPNAP in the near future.

American Association of Pediatrics Washington DC Convention Center

American Academy of Pediatrics- AAP Convention

We just came back from Washington, DC where we attended the 2009 American Academy of Pediatrics national conference, "Pediatric Heroes: Champions for Children." It was an awesome experience. We met some terrific pediatricians who shared with us the benefits having Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, including an increase in access to health care and increased profitability for their practices. We will be working with many of them going forward to help them fill open positions that they currently have. We also learned that Pediatric Nurse Practitioners are in high demand, and there are a number of fast track and emergency center PNP positions available at this time. All in all, it was great, and we are so glad we were able to participate in this year's Conference.
