Pediatric Home Care Services on the Rise

The demand for pediatric home care services has seen significant growth over the past 30 years.  Pediatric home care is the provision of medical care to children within their own homes.  These children are in need of a wide range of care, and may be suffering from an illness, recovering from surgery, or may have a disability.

It is estimated that over 500, 000 children use home health services in the United States.  According to a report published by the AAP, the growth is due to factors such as an increase of survival rates of those who receive inpatient care, simplification of medical equipment, advanced treatments, family preferences, and cost savings of in-home care versus extended hospital stays.  Today, the breadth of services administered to children in the home has significantly broadened to include such treatments as rehabilitation, pain management, intravenous medications, dialysis, surgical care, and beyond.

The American Academy of Pediatrics recognizes the benefits and growth of pediatric home health care and advocates for improvements in the financing of in-home care for children - Medicaid is currently the major payer of pediatric home health care.  "There's no place like home," can be especially true when a child is receiving medical care and can do so with the surroundings of family, friends, and the comforts of home.  The financial benefits of home care compared with continued hospitalization, also provides comfort, relief, and peace of mind for the family.

With the demand for pediatric home care services on the rise, so is the demand for in home healthcare providers.  Melnic Consulting Group currently has a unique and dynamic leadership opportunity for a Director of Children’s Home Care Services at a leading academic center children’s hospital in the Pacific Northwest.  The Director in this leadership role is responsible for the 66+ member team that manages the following services: Home care pharmacy, respiratory and durable medical equipment services and infusion and nutrition therapies. The proven leader in this role develops and implements strategic initiatives for services including business and clinical operations, facilities, capital and operating budgets, staffing and compliance with State and Federal health care regulations.

Phase-one of this four-phase project began in early 2011. The plan provides for an increase of 60-80 new inpatient beds by 2013 with a long range goal to increase the number of inpatient beds from 250 to 600 over the next twenty years. The first phase of the expansion includes cancer care, critical care and an improved emergency department with a new helistop nearby.
