Models of health care delivery are transforming. The roles of the advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) and physician assistants (PAs) are expanding and diversifying. The number of Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) in hospital generalist and subspecialty care are increasing as health care organizations relaize the benefits APPs provide.

As the Affordable Care Act is implemented and diagnosis-related group (DRG) prospective payment systems roll into pediatric medicine, greater numbers of children with complex problems will be cared for in primary care settings. More than ever, providers caring for children will need to be equipped with acute and subspecialty care knowledge as well as connected with experts for collaboration.
