Rush University College of Nursing: Linking Science to Pediatric Clinical Practice

Rush University Pediatric Clinical Nurse Specialist and Primary and Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner MSN students presented the culmination of graduate student knowledge and evidence-based interprofessional projects at an inaugural conference day April 9, 2014.  The conference event, “Linking Science to Pediatric Clinical Practice,” was planned and executed by the MSN students, with support by the faculty.  Strong student involvement in conference planning provided students with skills for future educational and conference planning activities. Projects topics included: extubation readiness, developmental screening tools, asthma, sickle cell disease, concussions, and HPV vaccination.

The conference targeted advanced practice providers and registered nurses from local medical centers and professional organizations including the Chicago chapter of NAPNAP and the Society of Pediatric Nurses. Conference attendance awarded 6.5 continuing education units. Objectives of the conference included identifying pediatric care and system challenges for advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) practice and translation of evidence-based solutions for identified problems. Feedback from the inaugural offering was extremely positive and supports continuation of this event with future graduating students. The conference was supported by the generous support from Melnic Consulting Group and the Rush University College of Nursing Alumni Association.

Rush University – Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Program

Rush University – College of Nursing
Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Postgraduate Certificate Program

Pediatric Nurse Practitioners who are interested in acute care nursing and are ready to take their careers to the next level should consider an Acute Care PNP program similar to the one offered by the Rush University College of Nursing in Chicago.   Their post-graduate certificate program prepares nurses for providing advanced nursing care for acutely, critically and chronically ill children and their families.  These patients have acute medical conditions and are treated by Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioners in a variety of settings and facilities including intensive care, emergency care, as outpatients and even during transport.

Responsibilities of the Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner include physical assessments, ordering and interpreting tests (diagnostics) and prescribing medications in a fast-paced environment.  The Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner is in great demand because of the growing numbers of children living in this country and because of the current health care crisis in the U.S., where patients forego preventive medical care because they are uninsured and cannot afford it, then turn to emergency or acute care facilities in a crisis situation.

The Rush University College of Nursing’s Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Program is ranked #5 of the best nursing schools by U.S. News & World Report.   Upon completion of the Rush ACPNP postgraduate program, graduates gain eligibility for certification from the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board and licensing/certification in states that offer it.  The application deadline for the term beginning in January of 2014 is August 1, 2013.  For more information about the ACPNP program at the Rush University College of Nursing, click here

“Beth Bolick is a world-class leader, innovator, and advocate in the advancement of pediatric nurses and healthcare.  I am thrilled that she has been selected for the RWJF Executive Nurse Fellow program.  She has worked hard for this opportunity and I know she will take full advantage of the program and will continue to be an integral leader in the improvement of our nation’s health and healthcare.  Beth is a close friend and I value my relationship with her and Rush University College of Nursing.” – Jill Gilliland, President and CEO of Melnic Consulting Group

Bolick joined Rush University in 1995 to design and implement the AC PNP program, which now ranks 5th for Pediatric Nurse Practitioner programs in U.S. News & World Report.  Bolick was a nurse practitioner in Rush University Medical Center's pediatric intensive care unit for more than ten years. Prior to that, she was the clinical educator and interim nurse manager of the Emergency Department at Children's Memorial Hospital in Chicago (now the Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago), and began her career in pediatrics at the Milwaukee Children's Hospital (now the Children's Hospital of Wisconsin).

Bolick is a member of the project team for the state of Illinois Emergency Medical Services for Children, and helped make the program the model for facility recognition for pediatric centers nationwide. She has worked with the Pediatric Nursing Certification Board to design and implement the national certification examination for AC PNPs, and is active in practice analysis and examination item writing. Bolick collaborated with the Emergency Nurses Association to provide the Emergency Nurses Pediatric Course, and was the chairperson for the organization's pediatric committee. She is on the Professional Issues Committee of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and co-edited the recently published text, Pediatric Acute Care: A Guide for Interprofessional Practice. More than 200 contributors from across the United States and Canada representing more than 20 disciplines came together for the work.  Bolick recently led a writing team of AC PNP academic program directors and employers in preparing two articles The Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner: Curriculum Overview and Matching Nurse Practitioner Education and Certification to Pediatric Acute Care Population Need: Recommendations for Employers.
