Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Insurance - Employer vs Individual Coverage

PNP Insurance - Do I need individual malpractice/liability insurance?

It is important to ask your future or current employer whether or not you will be covered under the practice’s or hospital’s malpractice insurance plan.  If so, you must find out the following information:

  • What are the limits of liability?
  • Are there any exclusions (i.e. negligence)?
  • Is the policy enforced 24 hours a day/7 days per week?
  • Does the policy cover out of pocket expenses  (i.e. lost wages to attend court hearings, depositions, meetings with attorneys, etc)?
  • Does coverage continue if you are no longer employed with that practice or organization? (i.e. Is there tail coverage?)

However, as a pediatric nurse practitioner, carrying your own malpractice policy can protect you by providing assistance in preparation for a deposition, paying for your defense and working to settle a judgment against you.

Should you consider individual malpractice/liability insurance?

Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Networking Tips

Outreach Guidelines for Pediatric Nurse Practitioners

When looking for a PNP career opportunity, networking is the best place to start.  Approaching contacts may involve attending meetings of your local NAPNAP Chapter, writing letters or emails to previous professors or employers, making telephone calls, or having lunch with key contacts.  Set a specific goal for each call or visit.  Decide which of the following you can reasonably expect from that individual:

 •A referral to an employer
•Information about their organization or another employer
•Open positions within their organization, or they have heard about
 •Advice on your search
•Names of other individuals to contact

Your first outreach may simply be to inform the person that you are seeking a new position. Follow up later, after the contact has had time to consider how he or she might help, using one of the approaches mentioned earlier.  For more ideas on approaching your PNP networking contacts Click Here.

PNP New Graduate Transition, What Now?

When you transition from a registered nurse to a pediatric nurse practitioner (PNP), your job transitions from a “job” to a “career.” That transition can be both exciting and uncertain. The transition has been described as carrying the bloody diaper to the provider to ask, “What do I do?” to being the provider. Many refer to it as learning to become the decision maker. That new level of PNP knowledge and responsibility carries with it documented levels of stress and fear that is reasonable but requires support.

When you enter the last six months of your educational training to become a PNP, you might also consider starting your job search. The NAPNAP Career Guide is a great place to find numerous resources that are particularly valuable for PNP New Grads.  Consider your PNP network, make a list of references, map out your geographic, practice setting, and unit or clinic preferences, and then start an electronic or paper file to track your plan and efforts. Create a calendar; include dates when you can work on your plan and times when you can interview either by phone or on-site. In addition, include two-four weeks of focused time after you graduate, to study for your boards. Think about your ideal PNP start date as well.

Congratulations to all the December New Grads!

Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Job Interview Tips

PNP Job Interview Tips

The key is to Practice, Practice, Practice!

So how do you practice for a pnp job interview? That is a good question; please also see PNP Job Interview Sample Questions. Try practicing your presentation and answers aloud until you are comfortable.  It is a good idea to use a video camera to capture the mock interview and self-critique. This helps to make you sound less rehearsed, pay attention to your nonverbal language, and any language you use to fill time when you need to think.  Video cameras are especially helpful because you can also critique your body language, posture, and hand movements.  Researchers believe that possibly more than 95% of our communication is nonverbal.

But what should you watch for when reviewing your video?

The NAPNAP Career Guide offers a full video review guide along with detailed tips and strategies for preparing to ace your next PNP interview.  Some of the tips include:

  • PNP Job Interview Practice Tips

PNP Job Interview - How to Say “Thank You”

When pursuing new PNP job opportunities, taking a short time to compose an articulate, hand-written thank you note is a small investment in your Pediatric Advanced Practice Nursing job search that will have a big payoff.  Send your note as soon as possible following the PNP interview.  Keep it brief, thanking the interviewer for their time and the opportunity meet with them, expressing your continuing interest in the position and offering to send any additional information or references they may need to consider your qualifications.  Always use professional stationery, blue or black ink, and have a plan for what you want to say before you start writing to avoid mistakes on the actual thank you note.  In this day and age of emailing and social media communication, the applicant who takes time to send a professional hand-written note will definitely get noticed and be remembered for their courtesy.  You can access more valuable information on PNP job interview thank you letters here.

PNP’s - Do you have a positive online image?

Is your social media helping or hurting your PNP employment opportunities?

According to an article published by Staffing Industry Analysis, potential employers DO research candidates through social media….but is it helping or hurting employment opportunities?  Social media can be a great way to express your personality, connect with businesses, research events, and stay in touch with friends and family, but there is also the potential to portray a less-than-stellar image to potential employers.  CareerBuilder published a survey in June 2013, stating that “43 percent of hiring managers who currently research candidates on social media found information that caused them not to hire a candidate — up 9 percentage points from last year.”  Reasons for not hiring potential employees included, provocative/inappropriate photos, information about drinking or drugs, bad mouthing previous employers, poor communication skills, discriminatory comments, and false qualifications.

As an advanced practice provider, there is little to no room for a substandard image.  If you do partake in social media, ensure that you are making a positive online impression.  Keep it tasteful, don’t badmouth others, and express your creativity in a sophisticated manner.  Watch your privacy settings so that you know who has access to your profile, but beware that even privacy settings have loopholes.  Careerbuilder’s survey also revealed that 1 in 5 employers did find positive features in a candidate’s social media that caused them to hire a candidate…so don’t be afraid to express your personality, just ensure it’s done in a tasteful manner.
