Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Acute Care Certification

The demand for Acute Care Certification is rapidly increasing across the United States. Texas, Arizona, Virginia and Maryland have issued statewide mandates for hospitals to require Acute Care Certification for most, if not all inpatient positions. Of the 10 Children’s hospitals with high scores in three or more specialties and named to the Honor Roll by US News and World Report’s 2014-2015"Best Children’s Hospitals," all require Acute Care certification for critical care PNP roles at least 5 of them either require or strongly prefer Acute Care Certification for the majority of inpatient jobs.  In addition, a statement given by the National Organization of Nurse Practitioner Faculties recommends that Acute Care Nurse Practitioners care for the majority of inpatient patients.

According to the (PNCB) Pediatric Nurse Certification Board, “the CPNP-AC role is designed to meet the specialized physiologic and psychological needs of children with complex acute, critical and chronic health conditions. CPNP-ACs respond to rapidly changing clinical conditions, including the recognition and management of emerging crises, organ dysfunction and failure.”

The National Council of State Boards of Nursing, the National Task Force Criteria and the APRN National Consensus Model include recommendations that all states require nurse practitioners to have congruence between education, national certification and clinical practice. While a few states may not currently require national certification for licensure, your employer may require certification or you may move to another state that requires it.

About Vanderbilt's Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Acute Care Program Director:
Sheree Haselton Allen is the Director for the Pediatric Acute Care Nurse Practitioner program. Sheree received her undergraduate degree in 1977 from the University of Tennessee. Her 36 years as an RN have been spent in the care of critically ill adults and children as well as nursing management and administration. She received her CCRN in pediatrics in 1994 and received the Morton Samuels Award for Nursing Excellence in 1996.


Sheree returned to the Vanderbilt School of Nursing and earned an MSN in 2003 with a specialty in pediatrics. She is currently board certified in both primary and acute care pediatrics. She is a member of the Iota Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau Honor Society of Nursing. She has been employed by the Monroe Carrell Jr. Childrens Hospital at Vanderbilt since 1998. Sheree has been a nurse practitioner with the Division of Pediatric Critical Care and Anesthesia since 2004 and maintains her practice there with the Pediatric Sedation service. She holds membership in NAPNAP, AAP and SCCM.

About Vanderbilt's Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Acute Care Program:
The PNP acute care specialty program is taught in a modified learning (block) format that includes: (1) courses offered in concentrated blocks of time on campus, including weekends, up to four times per semester, (2) on-line conferencing and (3) distributed course delivery methods which allow for continued faculty contact between sessions.

The modified learning format provides flexibility for working nurses. Students need not relocate or give up their employment while completing their MSN at Vanderbilt. You will access weekly lectures from a remote site through:

Rush University College of Nursing: Linking Science to Pediatric Clinical Practice

Rush University Pediatric Clinical Nurse Specialist and Primary and Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner MSN students presented the culmination of graduate student knowledge and evidence-based interprofessional projects at an inaugural conference day April 9, 2014.  The conference event, “Linking Science to Pediatric Clinical Practice,” was planned and executed by the MSN students, with support by the faculty.  Strong student involvement in conference planning provided students with skills for future educational and conference planning activities. Projects topics included: extubation readiness, developmental screening tools, asthma, sickle cell disease, concussions, and HPV vaccination.

The conference targeted advanced practice providers and registered nurses from local medical centers and professional organizations including the Chicago chapter of NAPNAP and the Society of Pediatric Nurses. Conference attendance awarded 6.5 continuing education units. Objectives of the conference included identifying pediatric care and system challenges for advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) practice and translation of evidence-based solutions for identified problems. Feedback from the inaugural offering was extremely positive and supports continuation of this event with future graduating students. The conference was supported by the generous support from Melnic Consulting Group and the Rush University College of Nursing Alumni Association.

Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner Postgraduate Certificate Program

Pediatric Nurse Practitioners who are interested in acute care nursing and are ready to take their careers to the next level should consider an Acute Care PNP program similar to the one offered by the Rush University College of Nursing in Chicago.   Their post-graduate certificate program prepares nurses for providing advanced nursing care for acutely, critically and chronically ill children and their families.  These patients have acute medical conditions and are treated by Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioners in a variety of settings and facilities including intensive care, emergency care, as outpatients and even during transport.

Responsibilities of the Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner include physical assessments, ordering and interpreting tests (diagnostics) and prescribing medications in a fast-paced environment.  The Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner is in great demand because of the growing numbers of children living in this country and because of the current health care crisis in the U.S., where patients forego preventive medical care because they are uninsured and cannot afford it, then turn to emergency or acute care facilities in a crisis situation.
