Hearts with Hope Foundation Changes Lives in Latin America

Big Smiles, Thanks to Hearts with Hope!

Hearts with Hope Foundation was established in 2003 with the goal to provide Latin American families access to medical care and other necessities for their children with congenital heart disease.  This extraordinary organization is comprised of passionate volunteers from around the United States. Hearts with Hope assembles “teams” of medical and humanitarian volunteers that travel to Latin America on a continuing basis to teach and assist health care professionals in the diagnosis and treatment of these children as well as provide financial, educational and emotional support for their families.

Wilma Berends, Director, Cardiac Center Nursing
at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children
Wilma Berends, Director, Cardiac Center Nursing at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, was among the remarkable volunteers who recently returned from a medical mission trip to Peru.  Wilma reported that Hearts with Hope was able to operate on 8 children aging from 2 months to 18 years old.  They also performed 16 cath procedures and all the patients did very well.  The volunteers were delighted that several children were even well enough to return to their homes before the conclusion of their medical mission trip.  Berends shared that “The hospital personnel and families were so grateful and happy that we were there. The staff was very good and eager to learn. I’m exhausted but it is so nice to feel appreciated.”

Jill, Gilliland, President of Melnic Consulting Group says, "we are blessed to have people like Wilma Berends and her medical mission team, who so selflessly give their time, skills, and hearts to those children in desperate need of medical attention. They are doing extraordinary things for not only the patients that they were able to see during this mission trip, but they are giving the medical staff in Peru the knowledge and skills to treat many more children in the future."

Pediatric cardiologists, pediatric cardiothoracic surgeons, perfusionists, pediatric cardiac nurses, anesthesiologists, dentists and humanitarian volunteers work alongside Peruvian counterparts to not only provide care for children, but to help develop a program to evaluate and treat children with congenital heart disease.  Hearts with Hope (Corazones Con Esperanza) Foundation is dedicated to enriching the lives of some many special children and their families – but they cannot achieve this goal alone.  It is through the generosity of sponsors and fundraisers that they are able to reach out to so many.

More smiling faces thanks to Hearts with Hope
