Models of health care delivery are transforming. The roles of the advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) and physician assistants (PAs) are expanding and diversifying. The number of Advanced Practice Providers (APPs) in hospital generalist and subspecialty care are increasing as health care organizations relaize the benefits APPs provide.

As the Affordable Care Act is implemented and diagnosis-related group (DRG) prospective payment systems roll into pediatric medicine, greater numbers of children with complex problems will be cared for in primary care settings. More than ever, providers caring for children will need to be equipped with acute and subspecialty care knowledge as well as connected with experts for collaboration. This program provides attendees with a broad view of pediatric care from a subspecialty and acute care perspective as well as opportunities to connect with experts and colleagues.

Rush University College of Nursing: Linking Science to Pediatric Clinical Practice

Rush University Pediatric Clinical Nurse Specialist and Primary and Acute Care Pediatric Nurse Practitioner MSN students presented the culmination of graduate student knowledge and evidence-based interprofessional projects at an inaugural conference day April 9, 2014.  The conference event, “Linking Science to Pediatric Clinical Practice,” was planned and executed by the MSN students, with support by the faculty.  Strong student involvement in conference planning provided students with skills for future educational and conference planning activities. Projects topics included: extubation readiness, developmental screening tools, asthma, sickle cell disease, concussions, and HPV vaccination.

The conference targeted advanced practice providers and registered nurses from local medical centers and professional organizations including the Chicago chapter of NAPNAP and the Society of Pediatric Nurses. Conference attendance awarded 6.5 continuing education units. Objectives of the conference included identifying pediatric care and system challenges for advanced practice registered nurse (APRN) practice and translation of evidence-based solutions for identified problems. Feedback from the inaugural offering was extremely positive and supports continuation of this event with future graduating students. The conference was supported by the generous support from Melnic Consulting Group and the Rush University College of Nursing Alumni Association.

Children’s National Medical Center - APRN Conference

Children’s National Medical Center’s First Annual Children’s National APRN Conference: Care of the Medically Fragile Child, held on January 26th, was a huge success!  As a leader and Director of Advanced Practice, Gretchen Brandon, along with the APRN Planning Committee, did a wonderful job organizing this event.  The morning was kicked off by an incredible presentation by Chief Operating Office, Kathy Chavanu Gorman.  Kathy presented a high level, reality based perspective on healthcare with great visuals to illustrate the depth of the issues. Then, with a thoughtful and strategic approach, she presented the opportunities for advanced practice nurses to provide solutions to those issues.  With a focus on high quality, lower cost care for patients, nurse practitioners and physician assistants are the advanced practice providers who are a formidable force in the solutions to healthcare. 

This event brought together a unique mix of RNs and APRNs from one of the nation’s leading children’s healthcare and research institutions.  The Children’s National APRN Conference was the perfect opportunity to share experiences, foster collaborations, and evaluate care tactics for medically fragile patients.

Age Parameters for APRNs

Advanced Practice Registered Nurses, or APRNs, are a highly valued and integral part of our nation’s health care system.  The classification of an APRN includes certified registered nurse anesthetists, certified nurse-midwives, clinical nurse specialists and certified nurse practitioners.  As the demand for APRNs rapidly increases, the education, accreditation, certification, licensure, and the roles of APRNs continue to evolve as well.    The LACE Network recently released a statement addressing Age Parameters for APRNs.  In this statement, “the Consensus Model for APRN Regulation advocates for services and care to be defined by patient needs. Therefore, a rigid establishment of population age parameters is not in the best interest of patients.   The definition of a population identified by specific age ranges may create barriers and limit access to care for patients with specific needs or health conditions.” 

As our nation approaches a significant physician shortage, APRNs are vital to the solution.  This is an important step in expanding patient access to APRNs and reducing the health care barriers to those in need.

Surgical Advanced Practice Nurse Program

RNFA Program for the Advanced Practice Nurse: First Surgical Assistant

Rush University College of Nursing is offering a Registered Nurse First Assistant (RNFA) two-course series for the advanced practice nurse (APRN) with the first class scheduled for fall of 2012. This program expands the APRN's skill set and adds value and marketability for current or future practice. Upon completion of the program, advanced practice nurses will have the required educational preparation and documentation to sit for the RNFA certification exam offered by the Competency & Credentialing Institute (CCI).
