NAPNAP 2015 Call for Abstracts

NAPNAP’s 36th Annual Conference, on Pediatric Health Care, will be held March 11-14, 2015, in Las Vegas, NV.  NAPNAP’s Conference Planning Committee is now accepting abstracts for Clinical Roundup Presentations, Research Podium/Posters, Practice Innovations Posters, and Intensive Workshops (IWS.)

According to NAPNAP's call for abstracts webpage, the "NAPNAP Conference Planning Committee strives to select sessions that are novel and distinguished from other similar or recently offered sessions."  To inquire further about submitting your abstract for the 2015 NAPNAP Conference review the FAQs here.

SUBMIT YOUR ABSTRACT:

• Clinical Roundup Presentations - The deadline for submission of Clinical Roundup presentations is July 15, 2014.  Click here to Download guidelines and learn more about the 2015 topics.
• Research Podium/Posters - The deadline for submission of Research Projects for Podium and Poster presentation is July 15, 2014.  Results will be emailed to submitters in September.  Click here to Download guidelines.

When selecting general session/keynote speakers, NAPNAP's Conference Planning Committee considers the following factors:

• Appeal to the NAPNAP audience
• Relevance to NAPNAP member's learning needs
• Fit with the conference theme
• Speaker's ability to attract attendees
• Speaker fees
• Speaker's location/potential travel costs

Congratulations to Cathy Haut, DNP, CPNP, CCRN, who was recently selected as the 2014 NAPNAP President Elect!

"Cathy is a passionate and dedicated leader who understands the impact that healthcare reform has on Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, as well as the opportunities it opens for growth and improvement," says Jill Gilliland, President of Melnic Consulting Group.  Cathy brings a unique perspective to NAPNAP as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner certified and experienced as both an Acute Care and Primary Care provider.  She will be a phenomenal addition to the NAPNAP leadership team."

As NAPNAP President Elect, Cathy's goals include:

• Leading the collaboration of primary, acute, and specialty PNPs, while aligning with NAPNAP goals in the provision of seamless health care for children.  
• Strengthening and enhancing membership in NAPNAP through new and creative endeavors.  
• Teaming with other national organization leaders and policy makers to provide NAPNAP representation at all forums where child health is an initiative.  
• And creating a program that will provide mentoring opportunities for inexperienced PNP potential leaders.

Cathy received her MS as a CNS in 1993 and was Certificate as a PNP in 1997. In 2010, she completed the DNP program at the University of Maryland, and in 2012 she was a Fellow in the Leadership in Nursing Academic Programs (AACN). Cathy is certified in both primary and acute care (PNCB).

Cathy currently practices in two clinical areas, one is in primary care at Beacon Pediatrics in Rehoboth Beach, DE and the other in acute care in the PICU at the Herman and Walter Samuelson Children's Hospital at Sinai in Baltimore, MD, where she has practiced for the past 15 years. She teaches in both acute and primary care PNP programs at the University of Maryland School of Nursing. Cathy was the Program Director for the Acute and Primary care PNP programs at the University of Maryland from 2010 to 2013.  Her previous experience includes working for the PNCB for 10 years and as a Clinical Nurse Specialist in the NICU and pediatrics.

"I am excited about representing both acute and primary care nurse practitioners on the NAPNAP board," says Cathy Haut.  Cathy is committed to supporting the NAPNAP mission, working together as a team, and also having fun.  She has been on the board of the MD Chesapeake chapter since 1996, with positions including programs, treasurer and president.  Cathy also served on the National Conference committee and represented NAPNAP on revising the Scope and Standards of Pediatric Nsg document.  She has been a speaker at the NAPNAP conference for many years as well as a presenter of the acute care review course.  Melnic Consulting Group is thrilled that Cathy Haut is now on the NAPNAP board.  Congratulations Cathy!

Calling all DNP students!  We are excited to announce NAPNAP’s new Melnic DNP Student Scholarship Award!  We are now accepting self-nominations, and the deadline is November 11.  Application is now open.  Don’t wait - APPLY TODAY!

About Melnic DNP Student Scholarship Award:
The Melnic DNP Student Scholarship Award is presented annually and sponsored by Melnic Consulting Group – Leader in Pediatric Nurse Placement and strong advocate for advanced practice providers.  The purpose is to support the education of one pediatric nurse practitioner doctoral student who demonstrates the ability to articulate and follow through on an innovative solution through clinical competence and academic achievement, as well as encourage involvement in NAPNAP and promote professional development of the individual student. The recipient must utilize the grant within one year after receiving the award and may receive this award only once.

Qualification Criteria Include:
• Acceptance into or current enrollment in accredited DNP program (either a PNP enrolled in a post-masters DNP program or BSN to DNP program with a focus in pediatrics)
• Must have an expected graduation date of within two years or less
• The award is selected based on academic and clinical excellence of the following:
                 - Must be in good standing academically
                 - Current member of NAPNAP

Application Requirements:
• Personal statement (300 words or less) addressing the following:
  - Explain why you enrolled in a DNP program
  - Describe your experience in pediatrics
  - Describe your professional goals and how NAPNAP may assist you in meeting those goals
  - Describe an issue that you feel has significant potential to impact the future practice of pediatrics
  - Describe how attending the NAPNAP Annual Conference will impact your education and future practice as a PNP
• Curriculum Vitae (CV) or resume
• Three letters of support from (1) nursing colleague, (2) a PNP faculty member, and (3) program preceptor addressing the applicant’s clinical competence, academic achievement, and involvement in addressing pediatric health care issues

 Recipient Will Receive the Following:
• A grant of $750 to be used for educational expenses
• A one-time complimentary student registration for the 2014 NAPNAP Annual Conference
• One night stay at the conference headquarters hotel
• Airfare or travel reimbursement to the 2014 NAPNAP Annual Conference (up to $400)
• Recipient will be recognized at the Awards Breakfast during the 2014 NAPNAP Annual Conference in March (attendance is required)

Loretta Ford, NAPNAP Conference, San Antonio, TX

Loretta Ford, NP, EdD, FAAN, delivered an inspirational and fascinating speech at this year’s NAPNAP Conference in San Antonio, TX.  Attending the Loretta Ford Past President’s Dinner in her honor at the age of 90, Loretta Ford is widely known and acclaimed for beginning the nurse practitioner movement more than 40 years ago.  There are now 140,000 practicing Nurse Practitioner in the United States.  View pictures from the Loretta Ford Dinner, NAPNAP 2012

Ford, who was inducted into the National Women’s Hall of Fame last year, has graduate degrees in nursing and a Doctorate in Education from the University of Colorado.  She was also certified as a Public Health Nurse. Learn more about Loretta Ford

2010 NAPNAP Conference in Chicago Melnic Consulting Group Pediatric Nurse Practitioners

The 2010 NAPNAP Conference in Chicago was well-organized, dynamic and had a plethora of high-quality topics. We enjoyed seeing old friends and meeting new ones. Dinners out gave us the opportunity to chat with our friends who were Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and enjoy the great food and skyline of Chicago. Here are some of the conference highlights:
- NAPNAP has worked hard to educate and encourage members to embrace advocacy and the issues that affect their scope of practice, reimbursement, autonomy and most of all the quality and access of heath care for children.
- NAPNAP had a number of acute care topics at the conference and plans to increase the topics to at least one acute care topic per session next year.
- The Acute Care SIG Group at NAPNAP includes Pediatric Nurse Practitioners working in inpatient units and is not limited to those people working in ICU’s.
- NAPNAP had the largest attendance ever at the Chicago 2010 Conference including a large number of Pediatric Nurse Practitioner students.
- We all enjoyed Melnic Consulting Group’s Wine and Cheese Event on Thursday night to thank PNP’s and Professors of PNP programs for all of their hard work and dedication.
- NAPNAP has worked hard on the “Healthy Eating and Activity Together" (HEAT) Program to improve child health through culturally appropriate interventions that enhance the family's ability to achieve the ideal balance between nutrition and physical activity to support optimal growth and wellness.

What an exciting day we have had! We enjoyed meeting nursing professors, nursing students, NAPNAP leadership and many other Pediatric Nurse Practitioners at the conference.

It was exciting to have so many people stop by our booth and hear about whaat children's hospitals and nurse practitioners are doing.

Our wine and cheese event was so much fun. It was great to have people from Dallas Children's Hospital and Children's Hospital of Weisconsion with us and to show our appreciation for all pediatric nurse practitioners do, and for the commitment nursing professors have to their education.

The evening cocktail parties have been affording us here at Melnic Consulting Group the chance to interact with many of the incredible people involved in the Health Care Community. Tonight we got a chance to sit down with two professors from University at Buffalo and chat about what keeps them going in today’s health care environment.
After a nice glass of wine and the relaxing atmosphere of San Diego took effect, our conversation took us towards what the essential element in a person is that wishes to make an impact in Pediatrics. With their long exposure to the health care world and after seeing many of their students become nurses, the two professors said that the most endearing quality in each of their students that they had taught was that they had a heart. By this, they explained, they meant that the students that were most successful as a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner in the Health Care Community were the ones who understand that the most important component in quality pediatric care not proficiency, but that the highest level proficiency can only be sustained by compassion.

As Melnic Consulting Group seeks to provide the highest quality candidates wherever they might be needed, we spent a great deal of time thinking about what our strategy was and how well we had followed the words of those two professors who had spent so long observing and participating in health care. After that, we realized that in order to remain a trusted name in the placement of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners around the United States by providing quality candidates to quality Children’s Hospitals and Clinics, we would have to look a little further past the resume and find people who shared our commitment to nursing excellence by focusing on what matters the most: the patient.

NAPNAP Conference San Diego

Update: NAPNAP Conference San Diego California

Here is the first update from our side of the world of Professional Nursing. The Melnic Team spent the last few days in San Diego for the annual NAPNAP Convention that was being held there. We had a great time interacting with other members of the nursing community there, and it was not so bad enjoying the warm Southern Californian weather.
Although each day was slightly different, each evening we ended up in the same spot, enjoying the company of the many wonderful people we met with a Melnic-sponsored cocktail hour. Although the conversations were about just anything, the most important thing being communicated was that although the Nursing Community is full of people from a vast range of different backgrounds, we all have a shared passion to provide the best care possible to the people that need it most.
