New DNP NNP Program at UTHSC-Memphis


As changes to the healthcare system in the United States continue to evolve, advanced practice practitioners are taking their careers to the next level by enrolling in programs that offer Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degrees. Many advanced practice nursing programs are moving from the Master’s to the doctoral level, offering the DNP that prepares nurses for leadership roles in clinical practice, clinical teaching and policy development.  The College of Nursing at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center-Memphis was one of the first in the U.S. to make this transition, offering accredited doctoral level programs since 2009.

UTHSC - Memphis is now offering a new DNP in Neonatal Nursing program which opens a tremendous opportunity for a Director to pioneer the DNP NNP Program that will prepare the Advanced Practice Nurse to care for premature and critically ill newborns from birth to two years of age.  The successful candidate for this specialty position has a doctoral degree from an accredited university and is a substantive neonatal nursing expert, with active clinical experience and documented successful experience in clinical teaching.  As Director, they will be responsible for managing and coordinating teaching, learning and research in the department.  Teaching responsibilities include didactic course work, clinical practice assignment and clinical supervision of students as well as curriculum development and mentoring.

This is a truly amazing opportunity for an experienced pediatric nurse manager to become the Director of Nursing at a summer camp for seriously ill children with chronic and life-threatening illnesses.   This nurse leader will be responsible for nursing care at the camp that includes hiring summer nurses, coordinating volunteer nurses, and tracking medications and supplies.  Additional responsibilities include inventory, budgeting, scheduling and overall management of nursing care and medical needs for those attending the camp.  This position requires the Director to be on the grounds full time during the summer months, and part time with flexibility during the remaining eight months of the year during family weekends and events.   Benefits include malpractice, medical and dental coverage in addition to living expenses while at the camp.

The camp opened in 2003, providing a safe environment for children with special needs that gives them the opportunity to succeed and experience camp the way that other kids do.  In addition to traditional summer recreational activities, there are components for classes in academics and the performing arts in addition to other activities.
