Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC

Welcome to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center)

The first Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh started in 1890 in a donated mansion that had been converted to a pediatric medical care facility.   Throughout the years, there have been additions, new buildings and towers culminating in the children’s medical facility of today that has 1.5 million square feet of space and 296 beds.  Today, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC (University of Pittsburgh Medical Center) is a leader in pediatric health care, with a worldwide reputation for pediatric medical excellence and outstanding clinical services, research and medical education.

Over thirty years ago, Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC pioneered the first pediatric transplant center in the U.S.  Since 1981 their team has performed more organ transplants than any other pediatric transplant center, and their survival rates are among the highest in the world.  They continue their quest for future successes in solid organ transplant through research into developing smaller ventricular assist devices to support small patients awaiting transplant and new therapies that will prevent organ rejection following transplant.
