Seattle Children’s Hospital has embarked upon a “Building Hope Expansion” plan that will enhance their goal of providing children and their families with the best pediatric health care available. Phase-one of this four-phase project began in early 2011. The plan provides for an increase of 60-80 new inpatient beds by 2013 with a long range goal to increase the number of inpatient beds from 250 to 600 over the next twenty years. The first phase of the expansion includes cancer care, critical care and an improved emergency department with a new helistop nearby. Materials used in the new building will match those of existing buildings, and the current park-like setting will be enhanced and extended to include the new construction once it’s completed in 2013. To quote one of the patients, Seattle Children’s is building a “high-high-high-in-the-sky building of hope” in keeping with their commitment of Hope, Care and Cure for the region’s children.

In U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Children’s Hospitals” for 2012-13, Seattle Children’s was ranked 6thof all children’s hospitals in the nation, the 20th time they have been recognized as a top children’s hospital. In addition, they are nationally ranked in all ten pediatric specialties in the report including #4 in nephrology, #5 in urology and #7 in cancer. In 2008, they achieved Magnet status for excellence in nursing care, an honor enjoyed by less than 4% of the hospitals in the United States. In May, 2012, three Seattle Children's projects were each winners of $100,000 grants from the Gates Foundation. This leading children's hospital is the primary teaching, clinical and research site for the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Washington School of Medicine, dedicated to excellence in the education of pediatric medical students. It is one of the top ten pediatric programs in the nation.
