Hiring Our Heroes

In an effort to support our returning veterans as they transition from military service to civilian life, there are many current initiatives taking place that positively address the issue of veterans’ unemployment.  The U.S. Chamber of Commerce has created one specific program, “Hiring Our Heroes.”  The objective is to raise awareness regarding veterans’ employment, and identify corporations in various sectors who are willing to hire veterans and offer them opportunities to use their military training, technical skills, leadership skills and experience.

With talents and skills that are directly transferrable to civilian jobs, hiring these veterans would be an easy way to fill the 3.5 million jobs in this country that cannot be filled because of the current skills gap.  Corporations want to hire, but there is a shortage in the workforce of qualified people to employ. In addition to offering transition workshops on topics such as careers, employment, job searches, employment counseling and mentoring, the “Hiring Our Heroes” program has hosted 502 hiring fairs in all fifty states for veterans and their spouses.  More than 18,000 direct placements in public, private and nonprofit organizations have been made from these hiring fairs. Overall, the program has helped 100,000 veterans or spouses find employment since its inception in 2011.

The Chamber continues working to further their initiative by creating awareness in the business community and securing commitments for future hiring of our heroes who have given so much of themselves.  For more information on the “Hiring Our Heroes” program, click on the following link.
