The Advanced Practice Nurse in the department of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery supervises, trains, and evaluates nurse practitioners, physician assistants and first surgical assistants, and they are responsible for staffing, orientation and continuing education of physician and surgical assistants. The NP or PA responsibilities include first assisting with open heart, vascular, endo-vascular and thoracic procedures in the OR. They assist with or perform Endo-Vein Harvesting and Radial Artery Harvesting, and they are skillful in using and manipulating surgical instruments and medical devices. They may assist the anesthesiologist as needed. The NP or PA is a nurse leader and role model with excellent communication skills who conveys information to families and health care personnel as appropriate. In addition to pre- and post-op care, the NP or PA provides family and patient education along with discharge planning.
