Texas Children's Hospital - SPECT-Acular Neurology Nurses

Texas Children’s Hospital opened its doors sixty years ago – a three story, 106 bed facility founded for the purpose of treating children. Today, this 464 bed pediatric medical institution, the nation’s largest children’s hospital, is famous not only for the finest patient care available, but for education with their academic partner, Baylor University School of Medicine, and groundbreaking research at its various centers and institutes. Years of rapid expansion and growth have resulted in the hospital being named to the Honor Roll of “Best Children’s Hospitals” of 2012-13, being ranked #4 in the nation by U.S. News and World Report, and ranked nationally in all ten pediatric specialties. They are consistently ranked among the top children’s hospitals by Parents magazine, and they have achieved Magnet designation for excellence in nursing and patient care.

At the recent Pediatric Nursing Conference, Melnic Consulting Group had the pleasure of learning about the poster presentation given by Texas Children's Hospital SPECT-Acular Neurology Nurses.
Their objectives included: Describe the purpose of SPECT scan; Describe the role the SPECT nurse; Describe a system for safe administration of the radioisotope Neurolyte in less than 30 seconds when the aura of a seizure begins.

Implications include:  1)Improved radiation safety outcomes for patients and nurses.  2)Set-up provides comfort to the patients as it allows increased mobility in the room.  3)Nurses have embraced their new expanded role and become part of the EMU team.
