The seventh annual report was released on June 11, citing findings based on extensive surveys sent to children’s hospitals and pediatric specialists across the country. While all children’s hospitals do amazing work in caring for critically ill children, the report identified ten children’s hospitals for this year’s Honor Roll, led once again by Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center is ranked among the best children’s hospitals in the nation across all pediatric specialties. Specifically, the Heart Institute at Cincinnati Children’s is recognized as the No. 3 pediatric heart program in the nation by both Parents magazine and U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Children’s Hospitals” in 2012-13. In a new twist, adult patients are also being treated in the Heart Institute at Cincinnati Children’s and at many other children’s hospitals across the country.
Thanks to research and medical advances, people born with congenital heart defects are living much longer than ever before, but their conditions are rarely “cured.” They require lifelong care and follow-up to prevent complications that may occur as a result of their conditions. Once they leave the pediatric system, they often do not receive the appropriate care they need, mainly because the focus on adult cardiology is on patients who have developed heart disease over time vs. those who were born with a malformation of the heart.
It is estimated only a small percentage of the 600,000+ adult patients with complex congenital heart disease are receiving the appropriate follow-up care. To fill this gap at Cincinnati Children’s, patients who reach age 18 transition to their Heart Institute’s Adolescent and Adult Congenital Heart Disease Program. This affords them the ongoing care they need in a familiar setting without changing hospitals or physicians.

This award-winning children's hospital is also tied for #7 on the Honor Roll of children’s hospitals in the U.S. by U.S. News and World Report’s “Best Children’s Hospitals” for 2012-13, in addition to being ranked nationally in all ten pediatric specialties including #4 in diabetes & endocrinology, #7 in pulmonology, #8 in cancer and #9 in orthopedics. To top it off, they have also achieved Magnet designation for excellence in nursing and patient care! Melnic would like to congratulate Children's Hospital Colorado and is thrilled to work with such an excellent care provider for children and their families.
In 1908, what is now known as Children’s Hospital Colorado started providing health care for sick, injured and crippled children, believing the climate of sunshine and fresh air were the perfect conditions for healing. Since then, this leading pediatric hospital has grown to be one of the largest in the nation, and is a leader in providing the best health care outcomes for children and their families. Their focus is to get kids healthy and back home as soon as possible, thus reducing the stress of hospital stays. The main hospital is located on the outskirts of Denver in Aurora, CO, with a network of care that includes 15 additional locations in the Denver metropolitan area for emergency/urgent care and outpatient therapy. CHC is a leader in pediatric care, research and education with close proximity to the adjacent University of Colorado Hospital and School of Medicine where pediatric specialists of the future receive their training. Their pediatric program is ranked in the top five in the nation.
Children’s Hospital Colorado moved into their new hospital in September of 2007, a state-of-the-art facility that was especially designed for pediatric patients who require different medical facilities, equipment, and specialties to heal faster. To their surprise, the need for additional pediatric medical care and services grew more quickly than anticipated, and Children’s Hospital Colorado is currently constructing a new ten-story tower. The construction on this 350,000 square foot expansion at a cost of $230 million was started in July of 2010 with expected completion in late 2012. It will add 124 beds to eventually increase patient capacity in the hospital to 500 beds. In addition to the number of beds, the tower will increase space for cancer treatment, advanced maternal fetal medicine, cardiac and rehabilitation departments.
