Nursing Leadership - Building Team Credibility

Nurse Leadership Success Strategies

Successful teams have successful leaders, but leadership is not something that is just handed to you overnight.  Stepping into a new nursing leadership role can be a rocky road, especially if you are a new nurse leader, or the new leader of an existing team.  Success starts with a well-defined strategy that includes building trust, opening up communication, and establishing credibility.  If managed correctly, this can be a time of opportunity, development and improvement, but if mismanaged, this time can also lead to resistance and resentment.

If you are a stepping into a new nursing leadership position, this article from Leadership Caffeine - Get it Right When Starting Up with Your New Team by Art Petty, author and consultant, provides some great strategies to navigate the uncharted territories of leading a new team.  You’ll also discover: The 4 Stages of New-Leader Assimilation, 5 Key Issues at Start-Up, and 4 Common Pitfalls of the Start-Up Leader.

Children's Hospital Colorado - Advanced Practice Nursing Jobs

Boettcher Atrium at Children's Colorado Hospital
Reference: Childrenscolorado.org
Children’s Hospital Colorado has just been named the #5 top children's hospital in the U.S. in Parents magazine's top hospitals rankings for 2013.  This award-winning children's hospital is also tied for #7 on the Honor Roll of children’s hospitals in the U.S. by U.S. News and World Report’s “Best Children’s Hospitals” for 2012-13, in addition to being ranked nationally in all ten pediatric specialties including #4 in diabetes & endocrinology, #7 in pulmonology, #8 in cancer and #9 in orthopedics.  To top it off, they have also achieved Magnet designation for excellence in nursing and patient care!  Melnic would like to congratulate Children's Hospital Colorado and is thrilled to work with such an excellent care provider for children and their families.

In 1908, what is now known as Children’s Hospital Colorado started providing health care for sick, injured and crippled children, believing the climate of sunshine and fresh air were the perfect conditions for healing.  Since then, this leading pediatric hospital has grown to be one of the largest in the nation, and is a leader in providing the best health care outcomes for children and their families. Their focus is to get kids healthy and back home as soon as possible, thus reducing the stress of hospital stays. The main hospital is located on the outskirts of Denver in Aurora, CO, with a network of care that includes 15 additional locations in the Denver metropolitan area for emergency/urgent care and outpatient therapy. CHC is a leader in pediatric care, research and education with close proximity to the adjacent University of Colorado Hospital and School of Medicine where pediatric specialists of the future receive their training. Their pediatric program is ranked in the top five in the nation.

Children’s Hospital Colorado moved into their new hospital in September of 2007, a state-of-the-art facility that was especially designed for pediatric patients who require different medical facilities, equipment, and specialties to heal faster. To their surprise, the need for additional pediatric medical care and services grew more quickly than anticipated, and Children’s Hospital Colorado is currently constructing a new ten-story tower. The construction on this 350,000 square foot expansion at a cost of $230 million was started in July of 2010 with expected completion in late 2012. It will add 124 beds to eventually increase patient capacity in the hospital to 500 beds. In addition to the number of beds, the tower will increase space for cancer treatment, advanced maternal fetal medicine, cardiac and rehabilitation departments.

Melnic Consulting Group is working alongside Children’s Hospital Colorado to help them build their team of advanced practice pediatric nursing healthcare providers.  We are currently interviewing candidates for several Pediatric Nursing jobs at Children’s Hospital Colorado.  Email jill@melnic.com for salary information or to learn more about the following APN jobs:

The plan provides for an increase of 60-80 new inpatient beds by 2013 with a long range goal to increase the number of inpatient beds from 250 to 600 over the next twenty years. The first phase of the expansion includes cancer care, critical care and an improved emergency department with a new helistop nearby. To quote one of the patients, Seattle Children’s is building a “high-high-high-in-the-sky building of hope” in keeping with their commitment of Hope, Care and Cure for the region’s children.

Nemours/duPont Hospital for Children - Big Expansion Plans!

Photo reference: www.nemouors.com
Phase I of their current expansion program continues on schedule as they plan for the future, building on their seventy years of progress helping children grow up healthy and able to reach their full potential.  Scheduled for completion in 2014, this phase of the expansion program will add private inpatient rooms, all with views to the outside, and a new facility for their Level II Emergency/Trauma Department that will increase the number of bays from 29 to 44.

Patients, families and caregivers participated in planning the new space resulting in a place of healing that is fun, bright, spacious and kid-friendly.  Young contributors are pleased that not only have they been asked to participate in plans, but that their suggestions are making a difference and being incorporated, including workspaces with lots of places to “plug in.”  Current patients are involved as well; they go to the windows every day to see what progress has been made on the new building and look for “Ready Freddy,” a figure the construction people move around every day so the patients can play a game, trying to find it each morning.

Parents love the sense of family at Nemours/duPont Hospital for Children and the superb specialty pediatric care patients receive there.  We look forward to watching Phase I grow and to its opening in 2014!  To learn more about the expansion project visit:  www.nemours.com
