Executive members of the National Association
of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners (NAPNAP) are in Washington, DC today
to represent advanced practice nursing professionals and promote children’s health
within the United States. This annual event,
known as “Fly In,” is led this year by Mary Chesney, NAPNAP Health Policy
Chair. She is joined by Cheri Barber,
NAPNAP President, Laura Searcy, NAPNAP Health Policy Member at Large, Dave
Mason, NAPNAP’s Governmental Affairs Director, the NAPNAP Health Policy Committee
and volunteers throughout the industry.
Jill Gilliland, President of Melnic Consulting Group will participate for the second year to support NAPNAP’s
legislative efforts, develop relationships among NAPNAP and federal
legislators, and effectively advocate for NAPNAP’s top legislative priorities for 2012.
Support and direct advocacy of the below
topics are among the goals identified by NAPNAP’s Health Policy Committee:
- Recognizing nurse practitioners and other pediatric
health care providers as primary care providers and leaders in new models
of care such as accountable care organizations and primary health care
homes.
- Promoting increased funding for advanced practice
registered nurse education and development of faculty.
- Expanding coverage and seeking fiscally responsible
reimbursement by governmental and commercial payers for services provided
by advanced practice nurses.
- Ensuring that advanced practice nurses caring for
pediatric patients are permitted to participate in any federal grant
programs aimed at piloting new models of care or increasing the use of
health information technology, and electronic medical records.
- Promoting access to pediatric advanced practice nurses,
physicians, and other health care providers across the care continuum
regardless of setting.
